El Bayadi Zeigler vie for Onondaga County Family Court Judge Eagle News Online

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5, and early voting is underway. The following candidates were asked by Eagle Newspapers what it was that made them want to run for their desired offices, how their experience will serve them going forward and why they’re an ideal candidate, what they’d consider the biggest challenges in their community at present, what their ideas are for addressing those challenges, and what they appreciate most about their respective communities. Christina El Bayadi, DEM My reasons for running are two-fold: my unique professional and personal experiences. As a child of divorce, growing up, I experienced the heartache that comes with family centered issues. Fast-forward, years later, and my parents are very good friends. Naturally, in law school, I was drawn to this area of law- I participated in the family law clinic, took every family law related class, and I graduated with a Certificate of Specialization in Family Law and Social Policy.

My Approach to Family Court

As a seasoned Family Court Judge, I have developed a unique approach to handling family law cases. My goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for all parties involved, while also ensuring that the law is upheld.

Key Principles

  • Empathy and Compassion: I believe that every individual has a unique story and deserves to be heard. I strive to create a non-judgmental space where parties can express themselves freely.

Judges Interpret and Enforce Laws, Not Create Them.

They are not the ones who create the laws, they are the ones who enforce them.

The Role of Judges in the Justice System

Judges play a crucial role in the justice system, but their primary function is not to create laws. Instead, they are responsible for interpreting and enforcing existing laws. This means that judges are not the ones who make the laws, but rather the ones who ensure that those laws are applied fairly and consistently.

    The Challenges Facing Judges

Judges face numerous challenges in their daily work.

But, I must admit, there’s one thing that makes Onondaga County truly special – its rich history.

A Brief History of Onondaga County

Onondaga County has a rich and diverse history that spans over 10,000 years. The area was first inhabited by the Native American tribes, including the Onondaga Nation, who called the region home. The name “Onondaga” is derived from the Iroquois word “Ondagah,” meaning “land of the hills.”

  • The Iroquois Confederacy, a powerful alliance of Native American tribes, played a significant role in the region’s early history. In the 17th century, European colonizers arrived, and the area became a hub for trade and commerce. The Erie Canal, completed in 1825, connected the Great Lakes to the Hudson River, making Onondaga County a vital transportation route. ## The Erie Canal and Its Impact*
  • The Erie Canal and Its Impact

The Erie Canal had a profound impact on the development of Onondaga County. It brought new opportunities for trade, commerce, and growth, and helped establish the region as a major hub for industry and agriculture. The canal enabled the transportation of goods, including grains, livestock, and manufactured products, between the Great Lakes and the Hudson River. The canal also facilitated the growth of cities, such as Syracuse, which became a major commercial center. The Erie Canal played a significant role in the development of the region’s economy, and its legacy can still be seen today.

The Legacy of the Erie Canal

The Erie Canal’s impact on Onondaga County’s history is still evident today. The canal’s legacy can be seen in the region’s architecture, infrastructure, and economy. Many of the canal’s original locks and structures have been preserved and restored, serving as a testament to the region’s rich history.
